LET'S SPLIT

Thursday, 25 July 2013

Occasionally, while having a Mega Browse on ASOS, I'll happen upon something amazing hidden deep within the site, that seems to have gone unnoticed. This skirt was one of those finds.  I'm always a little wary of a high split, but this one is just structured enough to make it OK. I'm wearing it with my new favourite crop top from H&M (£3.99! Naturally I bought it in every colour).

MY FAVOURITE SCENTS

Monday, 22 July 2013
I've always been fanatical about perfumes, especially super sweet scents. My love for the saccharine started with YSL Babydoll and Vera Wang Princess, two sugary fragrances I've always adored. Another trusty favourite is Eau de Merveilles, as is the men's scent Terre d'Hermes, which I encourage women everywhere to steal from their boyfriends. And not forgetting Serge Lutens' single scents, which I like to layer up depending on the occasion.

Recommendations welcome! What are your favourites?

A LOVE LETTER TO THE MICHAEL KORS WATCH

Sunday, 21 July 2013
My Michael Kors boyfriend watch is the unsung hero of this blog, and so today, I dedicate a post to it. It has graced my wrist for over four years, never losing time or tarnishing, no matter how many spiky bracelets I pile alongside it. Calling to mind the silhouette of the Rolex Daytona, it adds a boyish touch to even the pinkiest and fluffiest of outfits (of which you know I am a fan), makes a charming companion to layers of gold chains and friendship bracelets and looks just as good worn along with a white shirt and boyfriend jeans. And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. Many of my friends have invested in this trusty timepiece, some buying three at once - each in a different metal. Michael Kors boyfriend watch, I LOVE YOU AND ALWAYS WILL.

CANNED FASHION X THE OUTNET: SUMMER SOCIAL

Saturday, 20 July 2013
This week, I had the pleasure of co-hosting a Summer Social with THE OUTNET for some of my very favourite bloggers. Once the invitations - illustrated by me - had gone out, there was a lot of planning to do, but it all came together for one fabulous summer soiree.

It was one of the hottest days of the year - luckily, the hair and makeup team were there to mattify skin and volumise hair. We played dress up with THE OUTNET'S gorgeous summer collection (not least of all the new candy-hued jeans from their own brand Iris & Ink), feasted on shrimp, fishcakes and handbag-shaped biscuits, and sipped custom cocktails from my own illustrated menu, before taking to the photo booth to post in all our finery with my lifesized illustration. Scroll down for all the photos!

Bag candy - literally!

Everyone went gaga over Iris & Ink's new The Skinny collection in rainbow hues

I simply had to try on this Roksanda Ilincic jacket - NEED! - and a pair of Balenciaga sunglasses

I will remember the evening for a long time to come. Thank you to the lovely blogger ladies that made it (even though it was searing hot outside!) and of course to the wonderful THE OUTNET team, with whom none of this would have been possible.

WHEN PLATES BECOME DECORATIVE

Tuesday, 16 July 2013
I have a couple of confessions to make. 1) Last week, I left a party because the music sounded like 'noise'. And 2) I recently bought my first set of decorative plates.

Alright, that's not the whole story. I also bought some plate hangers and watched this video from beginning to end. The plates in question were a Matches sale buy and feature some impeccably dressed scribbles by Giles.

I have a feeling they won't be my last...

WEEKLY WISH LIST

Monday, 15 July 2013

This week's wish list is a bit of a massive one. What can I say, I'm feeling extra greedy. There are pastels, there is a bag with ears, there are heels that resemble bananas - everything you could wish for, really. I'm not quite sure whether I could ever justify a £910 headband but it's too pretty to not include. Pink lipstick, always. Oh and I actually bought that decorative plate (along with another design) in the Matches sale, before investing in some 'plate hangers'. Yes, they exist, and yes, I'm probably old before my time.

CINEMA DATE

Friday, 12 July 2013

My new favourite Sunday evening pastime is going to the cinema. It makes you forget that there are only a few hours left of the weekend and you have the perfect excuse to guzzle fizzy drink, pick 'n' mix and popcorn... which may be overpriced, but YOU'RE AT THE CINEMA! It's like fake money! Um.

So, last Sunday, I trotted off to see The Bling Ring, which, by the way, I loved. The soundtrack and clothes were enough to give me 1.5 hours of pure, unadulterated joy (with or without the pick 'n' mix). For the occasion, I wore a T by Alexander Wang jersey dress which I picked up from The Outnet last year (it's now on Yoox!), my Isabel Marant trainers and a couple of new wardrobe additions: first, this Second Female jacket that I've been wearing to death. I'd been looking for the perfect parka-style jacket for summer and this guy was the perfect fit. Second, this gorgeous grey tote, kindly gifted to me by Hemmingford Grey - soft, slouchy and the ideal size when you need to pack an umbrella, sunglasses, flats, kitchen sink... you know the drill.

SUMMER IN THE CITY

Wednesday, 10 July 2013

Slightly afraid to say it out loud in case I jinx it but... SUMMER'S HERE IN LONDON! WOO HOO! I celebrated last weekend by spending pretty much the whole weekend in Hyde Park wearing ONE glorious layer (and underwear, obvz). I snaffled this Forever 21 dress in the sale last summer and it's served me well ever since. These vintage Chanel flats are a more recent wardrobe addition, but tragically they're a little tight so am thinking of selling them. And not forgetting my new acid bright Marc B bag (which you can WIN, read on for details) - love clashing it against all the pink in my wardrobe.

Wearing:
Forever 21 Dress (similar here and here)
Chanel Flats (similar here)
Zara Home Hat (similar here)
H&M Heart Sunglasses

Fancy winning the same Marc B bag I'm wearing in this post? Well, thanks to them, now you can! I'm running the competition on my Instagram page - all you need to do is 'like' my Instagram photo of this bag (and if you fancy following me and Marc B there too, that'd be most excellent)! It's as easy as that. You have until 17/07/13 at midnight BST to enter. I'll contact the winner via Instagram.

T&Cs: If the bag is out of stock when the competition closes, the winner will be sent a similar bag with the same face value. This competition is only open to readers based in the UK. I will draw the winner using a random generator when the competition closes and contact them via Instagram to let them know they've won.

SHOESDAY

Tuesday, 9 July 2013

I did a trainer-themed Shoesday a little while ago, but my attitude to Shoesday sneaker posts is much like my attitude to my Isabel Marant sneaker collection - ONE IS NEVER ENOUGH. This summer, I'll be kicking in one (or five) pairs of the above...

1. Vans Authentic Rose, £47, via ASOS
2. Nike Max 1 Hyperfuse, £95, via JD Sports
3. Gola Spirit, £65, via Zalando
4. Isabel Marant Bekket, £360, via Matches
5. Gola Liberty Quota, £42, via ASOS
6. New Balance Windbreaker, £64.99
7. Valentino Camouflage, £566.77, via Saks
8. Isabel Marant Bluebell, £360, via Matches

And the winner of the ASOS £50 voucher is... CLAIRE V! Congratulations! (I used this random line picker to generate the winner's name, I play by the rules, me.)

THE LITTLE SUEDE DRESS

Monday, 8 July 2013

If you didn't already know, I have a small addiction to vintage shopping. Half the time I know I'll never wear the piece in question, but simply have to have it to add to my (increasingly uncontained) collection. This little suede shirt dress was a happy exception. I found it in Reign Wear on Berwick Street in Soho (my new favourite vintage shop), on one of those fruitful, spontaneous, in-between-meeting shopping trips. I do love a button-up dress - it speaks to my Ali McGraw sartorial aspirations.

What's more, it works perfectly with my new Laura Bailey for Radley satchel, a gratefully received gift from the Radley team (and now on sale for a pretty price).

I feel I should mention my old faithful M&S heels, which have survived long work days, fashion weeks abroad and even made an appearance on The Sartorialist. For 40 quid, that ain't bad.

WIN A £50 ASOS VOUCHER!

Saturday, 6 July 2013

As a little Saturday treat, I have a £50 ASOS voucher to give away! I have the lovely people at Appliances Online to thank. I like to think of them as our shopping fairygodmothers...or something. Anyway, to be in with the chance of winning, just 'like' Canned Fashion on Facebook and leave a comment below when you have! If you could include your name and email address too, that'd be swell. I'll announce the winner on Tuesday 9th July.

The competition is now closed! The lucky winner is... CLAIRE V! Congratulations! (I used this random line picker to generate the winner's name, I play by the rules, me.) Stay tuned for another exciting couple of competitions, going live in the next fortnight!

Another week, another list of wishes. Because every girl needs a Chanel umbrella case (IKR), a tiny bubblegum pink Balenciaga City bag and a pair of leather Vans (one of these is practical - can you guess which?). I've been hankering after a Stussy T-shirt ever since I spied one on a gal pal (I need to stop saying that), and I'm perversely enjoying the geeky practicality of that Eastpak bag.

1. Stussy 8 Ball Flower T-Shirt, £35, via Size?
2. Eastpak Bag, £25, via ASOS
3. Vans California Era 59, £35, via Size?
4. Vintage Chanel Umbrella Case
5. Topshop Nail Polish in High Voltage, £5
6. Topshop Floral Cigarette Pants, £38
7. Topshop Fluffy Tee, £24
8. Balenciaga Giant Mini City Bag, £795, via Matches

COLOUR Q&A WITH SASSOON'S MATT CARROLL

Thursday, 4 July 2013
Whenever I'm in the chair with Sassoon's wonderful colourist Matt Carroll, I always ask him to make me blonde, before he persuades me to opt for subtle highlights. I've always been intrigued by colour, thinking that hair as dark as mine couldn't be transformed without a lot of bleach and maintenance. I now have highlights which, although subtle, definitely warm up my skin tone and even a few months in, they are growing out with any hint of a root.

It's around this time in the year that I, along with most of my friends, start thinking about a new cut and/or colour. And I know we're not the only ones. So I asked the lovely Matt (whose knowledge extends far beyond hair and colour and into the depths of fashion, a man after my own heart) to answer some of my burning hair colour questions, and he obliged. And I made some fashion moodboards to accompany each look, just because. We chatted about blondes, brunettes, red heads and fun colour to freshen up your look - so read on to find out what Matt had to say.

Should I opt for those aubergine tones? Or do an Oscar PR Girl and go blonde?! I'd love to know your thoughts.

What's an easy way for a dark brunette like me to update their colour?

You have a great natural shade of brunette (thanks Matt!), so for an inexpensive low commitment colour I would recommend a colour enhancer. This will boost her natural tone and give you beautiful coloured hair that shimmers and shines. Lowlights or subtle highlights will add depth; it grows out naturally so is low maintenance!

What is your most requested brunette colour?
CHOCOLATE! When it comes to brunette shades, my clients always seem to want hair colour they can eat; chocolate, caramel and honey shades!

How should brunettes maintain a glossy mane?
Shine is key for brunettes - instantly making the hair look thicker and healthier. To maintain your colour as long as possible, use a shampoo and conditioner, such as Sassoon Professional Illuminating Clean and Condition that will lock in colour longer and leave your hair glossy and beautifully lustrous.

(Clockwise from top left: Thakoon top, Eddie Borgo bracelet, Acne jacket, Topshop pumps, Chloé top, Topshop sandals, T by Alexander Wang T-shirt , Vika Gazinskaya skirt)

I always ask this but can brunettes go blonde without ruining their hair? And what is the process?
Bleaching the hair does dry it out, so as part of your regular hair care routine, intensive treatments are important. I would advise going from brunette to blonde in stages over a six month period, by colouring the hair once every six weeks, by adding lighter tones and highlights. It is possible to make the transformation in one session but will need to be achieved by bleaching the hair and ensure you’re ready to sit in the chair for 3-4 hours!

How can natural blondes enhance their hair?
I would always blend a bespoke combination of tones together to create a perfect shade that’s true to my client’s needs and personality. For natural blondes, lighter and darker pieces through the hair will create effortless movement.

How often should bottle blondes get their roots done?
Every blonde is unique and nothing beats the look and feeling of freshly coloured blonde hair. I would recommend that clients who have an ‘all-over’ colour, visit the salon every 6 weeks to ensure optimum colour is achieved. For those clients who have highlights, a visit every 8-10 weeks is recommended, longevity is far greater than ‘all-over’ colour.

Any tips for keeping blonde hair from going yellow in the sun?
Every colourist’s favourite tip for maintaining beautiful, vibrant colour in the sun is to wear a hat! When on holiday or in the sun, don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your hair as well as your body! Mist all over with Sassoon Professional Halo Hydrate which protects against UV. If you’re not a fan of covering hair with a hat, tie long hair into a knot at the nape of the neck and keep short hair slicked back behind the ears and opt for a headscarf to keep in place.

(Clockwise from top left: Thakoon Addition top, Christian Louboutin flats, vintage Chanel bag, ASOS watch, Cutler and Gross glasses, Miu Miu skirt, Nike Air Max, vintage Chanel bag)

Which celebrity red heads do people bring pictures of into the salon when coming in for a colour appointment?
Isla Fisher is the most popular at the moment; her soft coppery colour looks great with paler skin tones. My favourite red head celebrity is Florence Walsh, she isn’t afraid to push brighter tones of red and with all her amazing Givenchy outfits she has been spotted in lately, who wouldn’t want her strong, sexy look?!

There is such a spectrum of different reds - which would you recommend for different skin tones?
Red is such a strong colour with a huge spectrum from flame-haired goddesses to rose golds and burgundy. If you have an olive skin tone, deep warm burgundies and ruby reds are great for your complexion. For paler skin tones hotter and more coppery tones are what you should opt for. The intense tomato toned red makes a statement and this girl is addicted to the attention that comes with it – a true party girl. For a slightly toned down version of the fiery red, a shade darker creates more of a natural and feminine look - it softens features and is not so in-your-face colour.

How can natural redheads enhance their colour?
Once again a colour enhancer allows you to experiment with a layer of all over shimmering colour, giving your hair a super glossy boost. It is always important to compliment your natural colouring, skin tone and complexion. For a natural redhead, pick a colour close to your own.  Pieces of strawberry blonde and lighter shades can add a sense of depth and thickness.

Taylor Tomasi Hill from Moda Operandi famously won't tell where she gets her hair coloured red - how easy is that shade of red to achieve?
If you are ready for some high-maintenance colour care this is totally achievable! Taylor obviously has a great colourist who has found the perfect shade of red for her. Regular rinses will ensure her red tone remains vibrant and shiny. Versions of Taylor’s hair can be achieved for most people, but it is important that you speak with your colourist about your skin tone, natural hair colour and how much you can commit.

(Clockwise from top left: J.Crew jacket, By Malene Birger trousers, Topshop nail polish, Proenza Schouler bag, Topshop nail polish, Topshop lip and cheek tint, Topshop skirt, Charlotte Olympia flats, Christian Louboutin pumps, Topshop jacket)

How can I embrace fun colour in a subtle way?
Hair colour is now an accessory – I think more and more people are experimenting with colour. Of course there’ll always be those who prefer or suit the more natural hues, such as Kate Hudson’s healthy, honey colour or Kate Middleton’s rich chocolate tresses.

For you I would work with your natural shade and skin tone. You should consider careful placement of aubergine and violet shades throughout her haircut. Small sections could be added underneath for an effortless effect or placed through your fringe for a more accentuated look.

What vibrant shades would you recommend for blondes, brunettes and red heads?
Blondes who want high-statement colour should experiment with vivid bottle greens, which can enhance the details of the haircut. For a softer, dreamy look pastel shades will instantly inject femininity.  Red heads should embrace hotter, fiery shades from the spectrum ultimately creating an instant depth to your colour.  Brunettes should be inspired by colour-rich gems and peacock shades. A well placed and considered pop of colour will add a colourful confidence to your look.

Dip dye…what are the options?
Dip-Dye or Ombré is achievable on most hair, but not so suitable for somebody who has short hair – I believe it works best on longer hair that is not overly layered. I always recommend to my clients who ask for the Ombré look to go for something soft and subtle so there is no definitive line created in your colour.
