MY HERB-TENDING OUTFIT

Saturday, 30 June 2012

I spent a sunny Thursday on my roof, tending to my little herb garden in Marant (obviously - what else would one wear to tend herbs?) and working from my alfresco desk. I'm big on home cooking so these herbs come in handy. I also have some smaller pots right outside my kitchen window for convenience.

And... the Aldo Qualheim boots (my affordable Dicker boot alternative) arrived! They're even better in real life. Also, not sure if I've ever blogged these Etoile Isabel Marant harem pants but I've had them for a couple of years and they're my go-to when I'm freelancing from home. Sometimes I like to pair them with a clashing hippie shirt, which elicits many perplexed stares when I leave the confines of my flat.

Wearing: Isabel Marant track tank, Etoile Isabel Marant harem pants, Aldo Qualheim boots and MAC lipstick in Russian Red.

A SUNDAY IN LONDON

Friday, 29 June 2012

On Sunday me and my boyfriend took a trip to The Serpentine to have a gander at the Pavillion designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei. Since I was dressed like a five year old (bow in hair, hoodie, denim jacket, Converse), an ice cream to start the day seemed appropriate.

The inside of the Pavillion is made entirely of cork with giant champagne corks as seats. Children were going CRAZY in there.

My Sunday stack:  La Mer watch, homemade neon friendship bracelets, Laura Lee signet ring and Zoe & Morgan Love ring.

I spotted a pair of Marants just like mine!

Can you spot me?

SAUSAGES!

And finally, Yoko Ono's Wishing Tree. I wished for a pug named Pearl, naturally.

Despite my scowl, it was a great day out! I recommend if you haven't already visited.

THE DICKER BOOT DUPE

Thursday, 28 June 2012

As you know, I have a major weakness for all things Isabel Marant. However, without my beloved NAP discount, I need to be a little more shopping-savvy. This season I've set my heart on the Betty/Bobby sneakers in black, which means that even though I adore the Dicker boots, I simply can't justify buying them too. Aldo's Qualheim has been doing the blog rounds for a while now as a Dicker dupe and when they finally  went into Aldo's half-price sale, that was my decision made. Plus, I was able to snap up both black and beige. Don't get me wrong, if I had the moolah, I would opt for Marant - I definitely prefer the lower heel and stitching. The Qualheims are still in transit - prepare for outfit posts when they arrive.

If there's nothing stopping you investing in the Dicker, go for it! The black and beige are on NET-A-PORTER right now and judging by previous seasons, they'll sell out soonish.

Shop here: Isabel Marant Dicker in black, Isabel Marant Dicker in beige, Aldo Qualheim in black, Aldo Qualheim in beige.

Update: The Qualheims just arrived and they are AWESOME in real life. Will blog them soon.

GIRLS WITH SKATEBOARDS

Wednesday, 27 June 2012

I've never been particularly sporty. I have no hand to eye co-ordination, can't hold my balance and have only ever won a race when I was pitted against a considerably overweight girl called Angharad at school. But that doesn't stop me dreaming of being a skater girl...

Oh, and if I was remotely adept at skating, I would:

A) Buy this floral gem of a board, handpainted by the excruciatingly beautiful AND talented Helen Glory girls. Buy it here.

and B) wear this outfit while doing it, Chanel cassette tape player clutch an' all:

Clockwise from left: 3.1 Phillip Lim leather vest, Rodarte hoodie, Lula Magazine Issue 14, VPL jersey bra, Isabel Marant Willow sneakers, 3.1 Phillip Lim silk satin-crepe pants, Comme des F***down beanie, Hermes Collier de Chien bracelet, Chanel Cassette Clutch.

THE BEST KIND OF ALPHABET

Tuesday, 26 June 2012

To say I'm slightly obsessed with all things personalised would be an understatement. Initial-embroidered cushion? I'm there. Engraved signet ring? All over it. Monogrammed pyjamas? STOP IT YOU'RE MAKING ME CRY.

So it wasn't surprising that I fell in sweet, sweet love when I laid my eyes on Catbird's teeny tiny gold letter earring studs. You could spell out your entire name, blog or pet pug on your ear. You could do a Kim Kardashian and wear your beau's initials on your lobe. Just THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES. And what's more, there's none of this 'gold-plated' cr*p. You guys, we're talking THE REAL DEAL. A-Z (minus a few letters) in solid 14k gold, baby. That's my favourite kind of alphabet.

P.s. My initials are N.L.H. Just sayin'.

PEARL THE PUG & BENNY THE BUNNY

Monday, 25 June 2012

I've been drawing some portraits of the team at PetsPyjamas (a fab pet website that I'm freelancing for - you have to check out if you have a pet of your own) for our business cards. Here you have me and my imaginary pug, Pearl (natch) and the gorgeous Coco Minnie with her pet bunny, Benny Bojangles.

I am wearing: Stella McCartney Resort 2013 jumper, Cheap Monday jeans, Isabel Marant Willow sneakers. Pearl is wearing Red Dingo harness in hot pink.

Coco is wearing: Topshop blouse (get similar here), Zara jacket, J Brand jeans and Topshop ballet pumps.

SATURDAY AT HOME

Sunday, 24 June 2012
Sometimes, all I want to do on a Saturday is laze around my flat. My perfect Saturdays in nearly always include lots of homemade food, baking, pampering and dressing up. Here's what I got up to (and wore, of course) yesterday.

The perfect lazy Saturday requires the perfect outfit, when trackpants and a baggy T-shirt simply won't do. Behold: the first of my sale goodies, the Colleen dress by Acne from fab boutique, The Editeur. Love the scoop back and super-thin jersey. I just ordered these monochrome flats from Zara which I can't wait to wear with the dress. I ignored the less-than-summery weather and wore this with my Marants and PS1 to go grab some magazines from the newsagent (the only part of my Saturday which required me to leave the confines of my flat).

(Wearing Acne Colleen dress, Isabel Marant Willow sneakers and Mathias Chaize necklace (a leaving present from the NET-A-PORTER girls - I am slightly obsessed with Mathias Chaize).

1. I always start with Perfect Day at Home with the Perfect Breakfast:

I went for a run in the morning and so, in an effort not to undo the good I had done, opted for a more healthy selection: boiled egg with asparagus soldiers, black grapes, fresh orange juice and a green tea. (If I'm feeling indulgent I'll do as I did this morning: devour a breakfast of buttery toast with a poached egg, veggies and homefries (potatoes parboiled and then fried with paprika, salt, pepper and chives. Yum.)

2. Nail painting time!

I used Essie Lilacism and then Topshop's Adrenalin glitter polish on my ring fingers.

3. Lunch: houmous on rye bread, salad and couscous.

4. An essential Saturday afternoon activity (I usually pick up a bunch of new magazines on the way back from my morning run) - Lula, Teen Vogue and a ramekin full of Haribo.

5. Quality time with my boyfriend (who has an infinitely better camera than me):

6. Champagne! I'm not always this decadent, but we had something to celebrate.

7. Dinner: easy peasy prawn soup, recipe under the photo.

This is the easiest peasiest meal ever and very low cal. You'll need:

Large prawns (I prefer cooked prawns as you can just pop them in at the last minute)
Chopped and deseeded red chilli
1 tsp ground ginger (fresh is even better but I'm not organised enough for that)
A handful of fresh chives (this is when the rooftop herb garden comes in handy)
3 beef stock cubes
Couple of pints of water
1 carrot, sliced thinly
1 red pepper, sliced thinly (you can add whatever veg you want - bamboo shoots, baby sweetcorn and mangetout work really well, too)
Soba noodles

Recipe: You can't really call this a recipe, as you just throw all the ingredients in together, boil for a few minutes (as long as the noodles and veg needs) and then chuck the cooked prawns in at the last second. I leave the chives as a garnish once served.

The Perfect End to my Perfect Saturday at Home was the best part: homemade cookie dough truffles with white chocolate chips. Sadly, I didn't photograph them as Tom and I were too busy stuffing our faces with said truffles but here is the recipe.

What are the elements of your perfect day in?

GIRL BANDS

Saturday, 23 June 2012

On Wednesday I went to see Best Coast, who were AMAZING. Especially their cover of Dammit by Blink 182. The first time I heard them was a couple of years ago at the Anna Sui show, where Boyfriend was one of the show soundtrack songs.

I've always loved female/female-fronted bands. Ever since I broke up with my first boyfriend at the age of 13 and found an affinity with Riot Grrrl (LOLZ). My teenage playlists would consist of a lot of shouty grrrl music, such as Bikini Kill, Sleater Kinney and of course, Hole. Then came a long-term love of twee - The Raincoats/Belle & Sebastian/Field Mice/Tullycraft. Recent loves include Best Coast, Warpaint, Haim and since Wednesday, Fear of Men, who supported Best Coast. I leave you with some of my favourite girl music...

Best Coast - When I'm With You

Warpaint - Undertow (love this live session)

Le Tigre - Deceptacon

Haim - Forever

LOVE WANT NEED: BABOUSHKA

Friday, 22 June 2012

I think I've found a slightly more realistically affordable (I say slightly) to my dream Chanel Matriochka bag in the form of Charlotte Olympia's teeny tiny Russian doll bag. HOW CUTE. I'd swing her around all day long if I could only justify spending £375 on a bag only large enough to fit a phone...

AMERICAN SUMMER

Thursday, 21 June 2012

Dreaming of 70s Americana... Navy and white, button-up denim skirts and American flag prints. I picked up this little tank from ASOS last summer - reminds me of Ali McGraw in her nautical gear in Love Story when I wear it with the white skirt.

Pictured: Mad Lady bikini, ASOS tank, Topshop skirt, Jimmy Choo sunglasses (which were a generous gift - thanks Jimmy Choo!)

P.s. 'Scuse the crinkled bed sheet - I have an aversion to ironing. (Sorry Mum.)

SUMMER DRESS-UP

Wednesday, 20 June 2012

So far, the British summertime has been, well, pretty much non-existent. Which is why when there is a freak day of sunshine, we Londoners get our legs out and our sunglasses on. That's exactly what I did yesterday. The sun's new lease of life gave me the perfect excuse to wear my new Tegan dress for the first time. Woop.

Wearing: Tegan dress, Isabel Marant sneakers, Proenza Schouler PS1 bag and Ray Ban sunglasses.

And not forgetting my bracelet stack! Including my gorgeous neon pink wrap watch by La Mer. I've got to tell you the story behind this. For my birthday in April, my darling boyfriend decided to get some gifting inspiration from my Pinterest boards. There, on my wish list board, he spotted the La Mer watch and got it for me! It's a Pinterest love story. Thanks Tom. And I should thank Alex, who pinned it in the first place.

Wearing: La Mer watch, Topshop spike bracelet (an Eddie Borgo stand-in until I get my mitts on the real deal), homemade neon friendship bracelet with crystals, Hamsa hand beaded necklace worn as a bracelet that I picked up from a random stall in New York, Laura Lee signet ring and Zoe & Morgan Love ring.

P.s. Dear sunshine: please don't go. Yours, Natalie.

STEP INTO MY OFFICE, BABY

Tuesday, 19 June 2012

I recently left NET-A-PORTER's hallowed halls for the freelance life, to pursue my freelance writing and illustrating. First on my agenda? Office makeover! Seeing as I spend a lot of time working from my flat now, I wanted my desk to be somewhere I'd want to be. I put up some shelves (thanks Dad!), invested in an industrial-style lamp and voila! Here is the result.

My new colleague, Domo Kun plus a Fifi Lapin invitation in an Urban Outfitters frame.

I filled the space above my desk with a few of my favourite show invitations from my time at NET-A-PORTER. Great memories. The New York invitation is from the Donna Karan show on 9/11. Spot the Be@rbrick! I've started collecting them.

Essential reading: some fashion/illustration reference books plus a few NET-A-PORTER lookbooks I worked on. And not forgetting my go-to self-help book, If You Need to Cry, Go Outside. Thanks Kelly Cutrone.

I got the yellow taxi from a tacky gift shop on a work trip to New York. It was filled with fudge and I thought I could use it as a clutch.

Anyway, I am available for writing and illustration commissions! You can find me on natalie@cannedfashion.com

MY BED

Friday, 15 June 2012

As someone with a SERIOUS shopping problem, this month has been a challenge. I'm trying to be thrifty which means homemade lunches, no more daily vanilla soy lattes from Starbucks and, most disturbingly, no new clothes. However, I have made one exception with this Urban Outfitters duvet cover. I have been lusting after it for a couple of months, but I'm glad I waited because the UO sale hit a few days ago and this monochromatic fella had a pretty 50% off. It's still available here. It's official - good things come to those who wait. Pinterest is proving a fab source of flat inspiration.

Pictured: Urban Outfitters duvet cover and new monogrammed cushion via Etsy.

I've become beguiled by all things monochrome (with a shot of neon pink, obvz), as you can see by my Pinspiration:

Oh, and you can follow my compulsive pinning here.

P.s. It's Friday! Tonight I'm heading to a dinner party, and this weekend I'll be hosting my parents in London for Father's Day - I've already got an American-style feast planned... What are your plans?
